Thomas R. Jones served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a corpsman assigned to the 3rd Marines Long-Range Reconnaissance. The marines that he served with affectionately called him "Doc." After his tour in Vietnam, he went to Bethesda Naval Hospital to learn about radio isotopes and their application in medicine. After his service ended, he headed the trauma unit at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois.
