Jack Kovalik was a member of the 106th Infantry Division assigned to the European Theater of Operation. He arrived in Europe in time to participate in the Battle of the Bulge, the last offensive mounted by the Germans. During the battle, he and his unit were captured by the Germans, and he remained a prisoner of war until April 1945 when he was liberated just prior to the end of the war in Europe.
