Hubert Cripe joined the United States Army Air Corps and was ultimately trained to fly B-24s. He was assigned to the 734th Bomber Squadron of the 453rd Bomber Group, which flew out of Buckenham, England. He participated in numerous bombing mission, including those during "Big Week" before being shot down. His crew was forced to bail out over Holland and was taken prisoner. He spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany, where he witnessed many attempted escapes.
