Mr. Pankey's unit landed on Omaha Beach in the 3rd wave during the Normandy invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was part of the 1st Division, 26th Infantry. Mr. Pankey went on to fight in all five European Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Central Europe, and Rhineland. His medals include (2) Purple Hearts, (2) Bronze Stars, European Theatre Medal, Good Conduct, and Combat Infantry Badge.
