Howard Ross served in the Army during WWII from February 1944, to 1946. He served in the Pacific Theatre mainly in the Philippines. As apart of the 5th Armored Division, Ross was a Tech Sergeant. The objective of the 5th Armored was to kill or capture Japanese still fighting on the island, even though it had already been taken back from the Japanese. Ross was injured by shrapnel in his leg after a mortar shell exploded near him and received the Purple Heart. After he recovered, he worked as a typist and ran a mimeograph machine after the war ended before he discharged.
