Ira Dale Cravens served as a United States Army Officer with the 3rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion of the 9th Armored Division. He was trapped behind enemy lines during the Battle of the Bulge and led his unit back to friendly lines. He was wounded near the Rhine River. He received a Silver Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was awarded Illinois License place #9(Silver Star) by Secretary of State Jesse White.
