Walter Bratten served as a a Gunners Mate aboard the USS Cushing (DD-376) when she met her fateful sinking on the night of November 13, 1942 during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Her hulk rests at the bottom of the waters around Savo Island, in area known as "Ironbottom Sound". After the sinking of the ship, Walter was sent to Espitiros Santos Island where he served as a storekeeper, and caught malaria 8 times.
